The Lightstream Freecool is a family of free cooling chillers equipped with frequency-controlled screw compressors and adopted microchannel technology for freecooling and condensing coils, which result in outstanding energy efficiency with EER values of up to 4.10.

 

Lightstream Freecool has been designed with attention to every detail to maximize efficiency and reliability and perfectly fulfilling requirements of mission-critical applications, industry process, commercial applications, and in every area where efficiency and reliability are the key factors.

Exact capacity match

The compact frequency-controlled screw compressors of Lightstream Freecool series chillers are particularly suitable for systems that are frequently operated under part-load.

These compressors also achieve impressively high full-load efficiency and significantly improved ESEER and SCOP values. With an average EER value of 3.72, Lighstream Freecool chillers are setting new benchmarks in the industry.

The compressors monitor their own application limits and communicate with the master system controls via Modbus. The integrated data log can be used at any time to analyze operation beyond the running time and optimize system settings.

RoboClean

AUTOMATIC COIL CLEANING SYSTEM

Lightstream Freecool chillers are equipped with RoboClean™ - an automatic coil cleaning system which determines the need for cleaning by reading from air differential pressure transmitters and initiates coil cleaning procedure when the pressure difference rises above a set point. Cleaning is performed by spraying water onto the coils by rotating nozzles.

 

Automatic heat exchanger cleaning technique allows for maintenance to be performed without shutting down the chiller and dismantling, thus reducing the system downtime incurred by manual cleaning methods.

Microchannel technology adopted in Lighstream Freecool design for both condenser and freecooling coils gives a number of advantages, including higher heat transfer rate, low airside pressure drops, and closer approach temperatures. The end result is up to 40% higher energy efficiency in comparison to fin/tube coil design.

Smaller coil face, slim design, up to 50% less weight, and less refrigerant charge result in lower system costs. Microchannel condensers used in Lightstream Freecool chillers are true HVAC coils developed and optimized especially for refrigeration applications and enable remarkably low condensing temperatures.

PERFORMANCE ADVANTAGES

Higher microchannel condenser performance results in a reduced condensing temperature, which in turn reduces compressor power consumption and increases the overall chiller efficiency, while the permissible operating scope of the compressors is increased to a higher ambient temperature.

The superior performance of the microchannel freecooling coil translates to higher free cooling capacity and increased free cooling hours, thus improving the overall system efficiency. At the same time, the microchannel freecooling coils do not affect the fan power consumption due to the low airside pressure drop.

Green R1234ze solution

ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY REFRIGERANT WITH LOW GLOBAL WARMING POTENTIAL

The proposed phase-down of HFC refrigerants has prompted an assessment of alternative fluids for a wide range of applications, including medium-temperature air-cooled chillers.

 

Recently developed R1234ze refrigerant features low global warming potential and zero ozone depletion potential and fulfils EU regulatory requirements for reducing the use of high global warming potential (GWP) substances. At the same time, R1234ze almost exactly matches the efficiency of R134a.

With R1234ze, Lightstream Freecool chiller is the environmentally-friendly leader of the range, while achieving the best energy performance levels for applications.

Intelligent fan system

AXIAL EC-DRIVEN FANS WITH REDUCED POWER CONSUMPTION

Lighstream Freecool’s new generation fan system not only reduces power consumption by up to 30% while easily managing extraordinarily high volume flows – but also works at a significantly reduced operating noise.

The smart fan system includes unique fans with bionic wing concept, the most advanced EC motor technology, and multifunctional air diffusers, resulting in extra economic efficiency for customers.

EC motor technology only produces savings during full-load operation - it is exactly when operating under partial load that EC motors lose much less of their efficiency.

Free cooling system

The cooling energy consumption takes up a significant portion of the total energy consumption of many applications, such as data centers, commercial and residential buildings, and process cooling. Free cooling is a very effective solution for reducing power consumption of cooling systems: it can take effect when the ambient temperature drops just a degree below the process return water temperature, and this is a major benefit for energy saving.

Lightstream Freecool operates in the mechanical cooling mode when the ambient temperature is high; in the partial free cooling mode when the temperature difference between return water and ambient air is as low as 1°C; and in full free cooling mode when the ambient temperature falls below the return water temperature of about 4°C. Raising the water temperatures when possible will also extend free cooling time.
 
In mixed and full free cooling modes, the chiller capacity is regulated by mixing valves (either 3-way or 2-way motorized valves) and by reducing fan speed, thus further reducing the power consumption of a chiller. In addition, the variable speed control of the fans allows the load to be precisely matched to cooling duty. The transition between the cooling modes is assured by the chiller control system which constantly measures the outdoor temperature.
 
When the chilled water plant comprises several free cooling chillers, the sequence management system can be used to achieve optimal energy efficiency.
 
In contrast to convenient air-cooled chillers, free cooling chillers have expanded operating scope and can function at very low ambient temperature conditions.

Lightstream Freecool free cooling chillers are equipped with premium quality, high-performance waterside components, thus covering every type of application.

MOTORIZED 3-WAY MIXING VALVE

Actuated 3-way mixing valve controls the supply water temperature at the reduced fan speed conditions. 2-way regulating valves are available as an option.

FLOODED EVAPORATOR

The flooded evaporator enables to operate at the higher saturated evaporating temperature when compared to many others evaporator types and allows to achieve higher cooling capacity with correspondingly higher efficiency. The refrigerant pool behaves as a flywheel, allowing the controls of the flooded evaporator to track the varying load of a batch process, while optimized tube geometry ensures optimal refrigerant distribution.

INVERTER-DRIVEN PUMPS

Compact, flexible and reliable inline pumps with integrated frequency converters help to maintain the precise volumetric water flow while keeping the energy consumption at an optimum level. Electro-coated cast iron pump body provides high corrosion resistance and ensures a long lifespan.

BUTTERFLY SHUT-OFF VALVES

Lightstream Freecool free cooling chillers feature butterfly shut-off valves with spherically machined valve discs and the matching molded liner ensure perfectly tight shutoff, even if the valve is frequently actuated.

WATER PIPEWORK

The chillers feature the carbon steel pipework with grooved couplings which offers high rigidity, flexibility, and vibration damping, and are characterized by low maintenance costs.
