Field tests for evaluating microchannel heat exchangers with variable fin pitch

Field tests for evaluating microchannel heat exchangers with variable fin pitch (VFP-MCHE) performance have been started this week. VFP-MCHE design features variable fin pitches and dimensions, tube geometries, port shapes, and the location of fins and tubes within the same heat exchanger core.

VFP-MCHE design with altered fin geometry and density for different heat exchanger sections suggest reduced airflow maldistribution effect, as well as lowered airside resistance.

To minimize the header-to-tube refrigerant flow maldistribution, cross-section areas of each tube are adjusted for a better balance of mass flux and pressure drop in tubes.

As a result of VFP-MCHE research, the Lambda family of precision cooling units will be adopted to use variable geometry microchannel heat exchangers to increase overall energy efficiency and performance.
