Field tests for evaluating variable geometry MCHE

June 20, 2016

Field tests for evaluating variable geometry microchannel heat exchanger (VG-MCHE) performance have been started this week. VG-MCHE design features variable fin types and dimensions, tube geometries, port shapes and the location of fins and tubes within the same heat exchanger core.

VG-MCHE design with altered fin geometry and density for different heat exchanger sections suggest reduced airflow mal-distribution effect, as well as lowered airside resistance.

To minimize the header-to-tube refrigerant flow maldistribution, cross-section areas of each tube are adjusted for a better balance of mass flux and pressure drop in tubes.
As a result of VG-MCHE research, the Lambda family of precision cooling units will be adopted to use variable geometry microchannel heat exchangers, thus increasing the overall energy efficiency and performance.
